CHARLINE PLACE
1419-1441 PENNSYLVANIA STREET
Architectural style: Richardsonian Romanesque
Built: 1890
Architects: Vrain and Sterner

Build before the devastating 1893 Silver Crash, Charline Place was originally a palatial grouping of four connected townhouses made of red sandstone; unfortunately the source of the stone is not documented. Note the asymmetrical elements that characterize this style: contrasting curved and straight lines, towers, balconies, steeply pitched roofs with front-facing gables, wraparound porches, classical ornamentation, rough surface texture, and lots of high brick chimneys. For more information, refer to Molly Brown's Capitol Hill Neighborhood, a companion book in this series.

Architects combined styles in native sandstones; round arches of the Richardsonian Romanesque style merge with Queen Anne towers.
