Award Winners
Robert (Bob) Baron, the publisher and founder of Fulcrum Publishing and sustaining member of Historic Denver, Inc., is the 2001 recipient of the Jack D. Rittenhouse Award. The Rittenhouse Award was established to honor outstanding people who have made significant contributions to the western community of the book.

Former HDI trustee John Woodward III was honored with the Mayor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts on November 2, 2001 for his contributions to the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District.

At their 122nd annual meeting, The Colorado Historical Society presented the Josephine Miles Award to Four Mile Historic Park for the Westward Ho! School Program. This was the only Denver award given in 2001 by the Society.

Preservation Meetings in 2002
The Preservation Committee of HDI typically meets on the second Friday of the month at noon over a brown bag lunch at the offices of Historic Denver, 1536 Wynkoop Street, Suite 400A. Co-Chairs Terry Andrews and Carla McConnell have set topics for the next quarter:Friday, January 11: Tom Sprung, HD Trustee and owner of Sprung Construction will present his Leadville restoration project.Friday, February 8: Updates from Sarah McCarthy, James Stratis and Everett Shigeta on the progress of the Preservation in the Schools initiative. Wednesday, March 6: State Historical Fund Study, Property Values and Preservation; a joint program with AIA Denver presented by the Colorado Historical Foundation. The University of Colorado at Denver College of Architecture and Planning and the Colorado Community Design Network will present the first of the “Challenging Suburbia” lecture series at the Denver Public Library B-2/ Conference Center on January 31. Kenneth Helphand, Professor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Oregon, and co-author of Yard Street Park: the Design of Suburban Open Space, will speak.

New Preservation Planning Funds for Colorado
The National Trust for Historic Preservation is pleased to announce the creation of the Bill and Carol Gossard Preservation Services Fund for Colorado. Carol Gossard, a lifelong preservationist, generously endowed the Bill and Carol Gossard Preservation Services Fund to encourage the preservation of the rich architectural and historic resources of Colorado.

The Bill and Carol Gossard Preservation Services Fund for Colorado is administered by the Mountains/Plains Office of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Local governments and non-profit organizations that are members of the National Trust Forum program are eligible to apply for matching grants ranging from $500 to $5,000. Eligible grant activities include building re-use feasibility studies, structural investigations, educational workshops and other planning needed to help save historic places in Colorado.

The deadline for applications is October1, February 1, and June 1, of each year. To receive a grant application or more information, contact John Mitterholzer in the National Trust’s Mountains/Plains office in Denver at 303 623-1504, or by e-mail at john_mitterholzer@nthp.org.

Colorado Historical Society to Close Research Library
The Colorado History Museum’s Stephen H. Hart Research Library, one of the premier institutions for the study of Western American history, will close temporarily for a major renovation.
