"Why not
make this lovely old theatre live again as a theatre of dreams?"
- Robert Edmond Jones 1932
The Central
City Opera House is truly a "theatre of dreams." Constructed
in 1878, it embodied the aspirations of the Welsh and Cornish miners
who built it. In 1932, art lovers launched a summer festival that
continues today with vibrant opera productions in a mountain setting.
In the intimate 550-seat opera house, audiences experience each
exquisite performance in this charming historic building.
In 2002, Central
City Opera presents a season worthy of its 70th anniversary. Opera
lovers will enjoy Georges Bizet's "Carmen," Benjamin Britten's
enchanting "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and American composer
Lee Hoiby's sultry "Summer and Smoke." Since most operas
are sell outs, be sure to put this special anniversary season of
opera on your calendar.
