Five Points

Laura Mauck's new book in the Images of America Series: Five Points Neighborhood of Denver has been nominated for Colorado Book of the Year in the nonfiction category by the Colorado Center for the Book. A pictorial, the book includes 200 black and white photos of the Five Points neighborhood from the 1870s to the present. Mauck spent over a year taking down the oral history of the area. She used her captions to relate each photo to western history. Mauck says, "This book resulted from an initiative from Mayor Webb. It has been very well received by the African American community. There was a need for it since nothing had been compiled about Five Points."

Mauck, who works in the African American Research Library at the Denver Public Library has a Masters degree in Historic Preservation from Eastern Michigan University. She moved to Denver in 1999. She says her new book, published by Arcadia Publishing, is "selling like hot cakes." Five Points Neighborhood of Denver is available at the Colorado Historical Society, Hue Man, Tattered Cover, Barnes and Noble and on Amazon.com.
