Historic Happenings

Preserving Union Station
Denver's LoDo District kicked off a fundraising campaign to pave the way for the renovation and beautification of historic Union Station. Officially named "All Aboard! Preserve Union Station, Colorado's Past and Future," the campaign gives Coloradoans the opportunity to immortalize their support of this historic icon with the purchase of approximately 8,000 engraved bricks. These bricks will form a plaza at the entrance of Union Station and are expected to cover 3,000 sq. ft. Proceeds will aid in the restoration of historic Union Station. For information on how to purchase an engraved brick call 1 800 750-2339.

Historic Denver partners to help Historic Greeley
Historic Denver, in partnership with the newly formed Historic Greeley, Inc., (HG) helped the organization receive its first State Historical Fund for a redevelopment project in the Greeley community. HD met with HG and the owner of the Greeley Tribune building last summer to discuss how funding could be applied for locally to restore perhaps the most important structure in Greeley's downtown historic district. Because the State Historical Fund no longer allows co-applications, Historic Denver wrote and prepared the grant on behalf of Historic Greeley and will assist them on the grant management of the project. Historic Denver hopes to be the recipient of a perpetual easement on the building. This is the beginning of a long-term partnership that will help a new preservation organization benefit from HD's 31 years of experience.

New Leadership for CPI
Mark Rodman, the new Executive Director of Colorado Preservation, Inc. (CPI), comes to Denver from North Carolina where he served as Chief Operating Officer of Preservation North Carolina. Rodman holds a Master of Arts degree in Historic Preservation Planning from Cornell University, and an MBA and BA from Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

Hire a Colorado Historian
Endowment for the Humanities is developing a grant line for Community History projects. They invite you to be part of a resource directory, which would be available to grant applicants seeking expert assistance on their projects. The CEH Community History Resource Directory will allow people within Colorado to identify humanities scholars and other professionals willing to work with them on community history projects. Professionals who participate are paid honoraria, consulting fees or evaluator fees for all projects as well as travel expenses. If you are interested in being added to the CEH Community History Resources Directory contact Mark Skinner (mskinner@ceh.org) or Betty Jo Brenner (brenner@ceh.org or fax them at 303 864-9361.

Fairmount Heritage Foundation to Educate
The newly formed Fairmount Heritage Foundation is a public charity whose mission, according to Fairmount Cemetery Co. President and Foundation Board member Frank Hegner is "to protect and preserve the rich and diverse historical assets, resources and values of Fairmount and Riverside Cemeteries and to educate the community about them." Expanded activities at both cemeteries will include living history tours such as "Governors and Gunslingers" at Riverside Cemetery in June and an arborist's study of Fairmount's "Amazing Trees" in October. For further information about upcoming events, membership, volunteering and contribution opportunities, call Mary Sue Hyslop at 303 399-0692.

Onward and Upward
After ten years as an educator, historian and researcher, MBH docent and "guide extraordinaire" Modupe Labode has moved on to become Director of Publications and Chief Historian for the State of Colorado. Modupe, a Rhodes scholar who earned her Ph.D. from Oxford University, is a published author of many academic articles. Amongst her research topics, Modupe investigated the missionary movement in Africa and examined African/Brazilian relations. We wish her well in her new and very prestigious position.

Keep 'Em Laughing
For comedy lovers, downtown is the perfect location for a drink and a chuckle. The Rattlebrain Theater Co., located in the renovated basement of the historic May D&F Tower on the 16th St. mall, opened its doors in February to applause from audiences and historians alike. Denver based Architectural Workshop designed the new theater described as "urban chic." Rattlebrain owners Kirk Anderson and Dave and Jane Shirley plan to offer acting, comic writing workshops and theater classes in the space. They spent $300,000 on the stage, bar, lighting and seating for 170. For reservations to Denver's new comedy theater, call 720 932-7384.
