Adopt a Sacred Treasure

In 2003, the National Trust for Historic Preservation listed urban sacred places as one of the eleven most endangered places in America. Along with other national treasures, historic sacred places are struggling to survive in a time of limited capital budgets, soaring real estate values, and changing demographics. Restoration at St. Thomas Episcopal

"We've known for quite some time that we needed to do restoration and preservation," confesses volunteer grant writer and former St. Thomas senior warden, Kathi Atkins. The difficulty was determining how to complete the restoration. The tile roof for the church leaks, the ornate Spanish Colonial Revival façade is crumbling and entire systems like electrical need replacing. Read more...

 

Repairing Cast Stone on Sacred Landmarks
St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Denver has a cast stone Churrigueresque entry surround that is currently under restoration. Cast stone-a mixture of water, sand, coarse aggregate, and cementing agents-has proven over time to be an attractive and durable building material, when properly manufactured. It gained popularity in the 1860s and, by the early decades of the 20th century, became widely accepted as an economical substitute for natural stone. Unfortunately, much historic cast stone is unnecessarily replaced when it could easily be repaired and preserved in-situ, or left untreated.
