The 1908 Gothic Revival Grant Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church, with its 1920 community center addition, was designed by the prominent Denver architect Harry J. Manning. The building was added to the Colorado State Register for Historic Places in 2001. Grant Avenue was the first Methodist Congregation in the newly formed incorporated community of South Denver. The United Methodist Conference recognized the need for Methodist churches to be constructed outside the city limits of Denver. The building functioned not only as a center for worship but also as a major community center for activities from sports to socials, particularly in the youth area. Currently, the building is home to many community groups, such as the Colorado Honor Band, the Washington Park Players, Mile High Freedom Band, and the Colorado Wind Ensemble, mentoring program, child care and education, peace walks, health services for senior citizens and sponsoring refugee families.
