Built in 1891 by architects Miller and Janisch. Construction began
at Ellsworth and Lincoln on June 28, 1891. The cornerstone was laid
with John L. Routt, the last territorial governor and first state
governor of Colorado, officiating at the ceremony.
The
property is on the Colorado Register for Historic Places as well
as is a Denver Local Landmark. It is an example of Richardsonian
Romanesque architecture with Gothic details. The church is of the
denomination of Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and has been
since it was built. The average attendance now is 110-160 people
with about 200 attending for specific holidays. The surrounding
neighborhood is diverse. There are African American, Latinos, Asian,
gay and lesbians and young singles, professionals and families.
The property is now the meeting place for many community groups.
Youth Track Education for adolescent boys in the criminal justice
system meets there every day. Four Alcoholic Anonymous groups, four
Cocaine Anonymous groups, language classes from the Colorado Free
University, Girl Scouts - overnights when the weather is too inclement
for outdoor overnights, and the Broadway Business Association have
meetings there. The church is a Red Cross emergency shelter. Denver
Classical Guitar Society has its monthly meetings and concerts in
the building. The South Broadway Business Association holds meetings
there, as well as other community groups. The church is the Precinct
for elections. The Pieta House Aids Hospice holds events there.
The church is open for weddings for non-church members. Any local
non-profit is welcome to have meetings in the church.
