Agape Church

The gothic revival building, which now houses Agape Christian Church, has been the home to a great variety of congregations since it was built in 1887. A German Methodist congregation was the first group to occupy the building. They stayed until 1935, when the Japanese congregation of Simpson United Methodist Church moved into the church. In 1962, Zion Temple Pentecostal Church, an African-American congregation, began worshiping there and continued for the next 13 years until Gospel Mission Pentecostal Church, another African American congregation, occupied the building for five years. In 1980, Agape Christian Church became the occupants. Agape has helped other congregations to begin, including three Hispanic congregations and one Vietnamese Evangelical Baptist church. Currently, Agape runs Charity's House Ministries, which provides housing for 112 low-income families, provides Community Outreach Service Center that offers employment placement, job preparation, computer training, alcohol awareness, English and GED classes and parenting classes, a weekly food bank, community kitchen, summer day-camp, fellowship groups for men and women, and a youth leadership tutoring program.
