Annunciation Church

The Annunciation parish began as St. Ann's in 1883 and was located at 38th and Delgany streets. This congregation was led by Fr. Michael J. Carmody. The church was destroyed by a fire in 1885, and then rebuilt soon after at the same location. When Fr. Henry Robinson took over the church in 1889 he realized that many of the parishioners were leaving the area, which was becoming highly industrialized, and moving east. In 1890, Fr. Robinson sold the church and school in the rapidly developing northeast Denver. At this time the parish was renamed Annunciation. The new church and school were opened in October 1890, at the corner of 37th and Humboldt. As of 1913, the Annunciation School served elementary through high school students and was operated by the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth. This was the largest Catholic school in Denver with as many as 675 students. While the high school was closed in 1968, the elementary school, located in the 3500 block of Lafayette, is still in operation.
