The Do's and Don'ts of Historic Wood Windows

Remember you need to obtain a permit from the city to replace windows if you are in a historic district.

Do

  • Carefully explore all options before proceeding with any window work.
  • Restore art glass windows.
  • Re-caulk around the window frames and repair window hardware.
  • Replace damaged window components with matching materials of similar size and shape.
  • Replace (if necessary) entire windows with others of original size and shape.
  • Install basement level security grills inside- behind the windows.

Don't

  • Replace existing double hung windows with single fixed glass picture windows.
  • Install glass block to fill in windows.
