THE SURVEY

Discover Denver is a citywide building survey focused on identifying buildings that are historically, architecturally or culturally significant to Denver’s history. The survey documents the city’s individual buildings, the histories of its neighborhoods, and the stories important to its communities. Led by Historic Denver and the City and County of Denver, the project is funded primarily by a grant from the Colorado State Historical Fund.

HOW WE SURVEY

Discover Denver documents each of Denver’s neighborhoods, building by building, using special software on handheld tablets. From the public right of way, surveyors snap a few photographs of each building and note its architectural features. Local volunteers play a significant role in Discover Denver by helping to document buildings throughout the city and researching the history of individual buildings.

Residents and business owners experience minimal – if any – impact from volunteer surveyors working in the survey areas. Survey volunteers observe a property from the public street or sidewalk, taking notes on its physical integrity (whether or not the building retains its historic features). Volunteers have project-specific identification and should identify themselves if asked. No one associated with Discover Denver will enter or access a property without the owner’s permission.
